Ashkenaz, 19th century. Detailed Description: An impressive handwritten manuscript on treated parchment, serving as a prayer book for the cantor or synagogue warden. The text includes a broad collection of prayers and hymns for Sabbaths, festivals, and the High Holidays, together with special blessings recited in synagogue life. Among the contents: the hymns “Lecha Dodi” and “Mizmor Shir LeYom HaShabbat”; Psalm “Hashem Malach Ge’ut Lavash”; Birkat HaGomel; “Baruch Shep’tarani” (for a son’s Bar Mitzvah); Mi Sheberach prayers for the sick, for the Sabbath, and for donors (“Matnat Yad”); blessings for the Haftarah of Sabbaths, festivals and High Holidays; Birkat HaChodesh; Av HaRachamim; and an elaborate, exceptionally detailed Yizkor section. The Yizkor prayers go far beyond the usual memorial for a single community, and include commemorations for the great rabbinic figures of France and Germany, as well as for the martyrs of Ashkenaz throughout the generations. Among those mentioned by name are Rabbeinu Gershom Me’or HaGolah, Rashi, Rabbeinu Tam, Rabbeinu Chananel, the Rivash, Rabbi Meir of Rothenburg (Maharam), Rabbi Shimon HaGadol, Rabbi Peretz, Rabbi Yaakov ben Rabbi Moshe HaLevi, Rabbi Yisrael ben Petaḥyah, and the holy martyr Rabbi Naftali (“Hertzel”) ben Yitzchak HaLevi of Kfar Vetlsa, who gave his life sanctifying God’s Name. Additional Yizkor passages are dedicated to the martyrs and burned communities of Speyer, Worms, Mainz, Frankfurt, and many others across Ashkenaz, as well as to those of Swabia, Bavaria, Carinthia, England, Russia, Poland, and more—virtually a comprehensive roll call of European Jewry. Later sections include a General Yizkor “for all those who labored for their communities, annulled decrees and taxes, and built synagogues, ” and finally a Prayer for the Monarchy, with a blank space left for inscribing the names of the rulers (which was never filled in). Written in square Ashkenazic script on 11 sheets of treated parchment (14 written pages), measuring approx. 33 cm. Each written page is framed with a red border; the titles and initial words of the early sections are in red ink, as are the opening letters of Lecha Dodi and portions of the Haftarah and Mi Sheberach blessings. Inside the front cover appears an ownership inscription in Hebrew script: “K.K. Blotzheim 1897.” On the final leaf and the flyleaves are additional inscriptions in Latin script. Original worn binding; stains, wrinkles, a few tears and minor repairs; slight damage to text. Overall very good condition for its age.
