Includes letters of recommendation for the author upon his departure abroad, written by leading rabbis: Rabbi Raphael Meir Panizel, Rabbi Shmuel Salant, Rabbi Yaakov Shaul Elyashar, Rabbi Shmuel Heller, and others. On the first title page appears a rare autograph dedication and signature of Sir Moses Montefiore – one of the most revered and influential figures in the history of the Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel in the 19th century. Sir Moses Montefiore (1784–1885), the renowned British Jewish philanthropist and public figure, devoted his life to the welfare of Jewish communities around the world and to strengthening the Yishuv in the Holy Land. He visited the country seven times, founded the first neighborhoods outside the Old City walls (including Mishkenot Sha’ananim), and generously supported institutions of Torah study, education, and livelihood for the Jews of Jerusalem. This copy was apparently prepared especially for Montefiore – printed on exceptionally thick paper, with an engraved frontispiece title page and gilt endpapers – indicating a presentation or specially commissioned copy.
