A warm New Year’s greeting letter, handwritten and signed by Rabbi Eliyahu Eliezer Dessler, addressed to Rabbi Avraham Yaakov Neimark (author of “Eshl Avraham”). On the reverse side of the same sheet, an additional letter in Yiddish written by Rebbetzin Bluma Dessler to Rebbetzin Sarah Neimark. [1] sheet of paper. 13×20 cm. Condition: very good. Rabbi Eliyahu Eliezer Dessler (1892–1953) – one of the greatest ba’alei mussar of all time and author of Michtav Me’Eliyahu, considered the definitive modern work of Jewish ethical thought. A disciple of the Kelm school of Mussar and student of Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Broide, son-in-law of the Saba of Kelm. He married Bluma, daughter of Rabbi Nachum Ze’ev Ziv and granddaughter of the Saba of Kelm. Among the few to have received semichah from the leading Lithuanian sage Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski, his relative. In 1928 he emigrated to England, serving as rabbi in East End and Dalston. In the early 1940s he joined the Gateshead Kollel as its spiritual supervisor, where he devoted himself to building the institution both spiritually and financially. In 1947, at the invitation of Rabbi Yosef Shlomo Kahaneman, he moved to Bnei Brak to serve as mashgiach ruchani of the Ponevezh Yeshiva. His mussar talks became legendary in the yeshiva world, and Michtav Me’Eliyahu, compiled from his letters and lectures, became one of the foundational works of modern Mussar thought. Rebbetzin Bluma Dessler (d. 1951), daughter of Rabbi Nachum Ze’ev of Kelm and granddaughter of the Saba of Kelm, married Rabbi Dessler in 1920. She was renowned for her wisdom, moral refinement, and devotion to the ideals of the Kelm school. Rabbi Avraham Yaakov Neimark (1878–1961) – rabbi of Prienai (Perrn), Lithuania, later Av Beit Din of Tel Aviv, and author of the multivolume work Eshl Avraham. He was married to Livia Sarah Esther, daughter of Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Abel, a descendant of Rabbi Avraham, the brother of the Vilna Gaon. The title of his work, “Eshl”, is an acronym of her name – Esther Sarah Livia – and in his introduction he praises her virtues extensively. The couple had no children.
