Rare and Beautiful Silver Hanukkah Lamp – Continental, 19th Century - An exceptionally impressive Hanukkah lamp, crafted in silver using techniques of repoussé, hammering, and casting — a rare and distinctive 19th-century creation, silver hallmarked. The lamp combines rich imagination, European classicism, and Jewish symbolic motifs, representing fine continental craftsmanship of distinctive character. At the center of the backplate appears a raised Hanukkah menorah in repoussé work, flanked by two winged lions standing upright on decorated columns as symbols of strength and protection. On each side are ornamental pillars with floral and neoclassical reliefs. Above them rises a large crown, and to either side stand cast eagles with spread wings—a powerful and uncommon motif in Jewish ceremonial art of the period. The oil cups are formed as three-dimensional lions, each with a head that opens for filling the oil, an artistic and imaginative design. A small matching oil jug accompanies the lamp, following the same stylistic line and completing the composition. The work demonstrates a high level of mastery in traditional metal techniques, with precise repoussé and clean casting, yet it also bears a slightly folk-art quality, typical of Jewish craftsmanship outside the major European silversmithing centers.
