“With Radiant Countenance and Endless Heavenly Grace” – Poetic Letter from Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik of Boston to the President of the Mizrachi Movement - An elegant and poetic autograph letter, entirely in the handwriting and bearing the signature of Rabbi Joseph Dov HaLevi Soloveitchik, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva University, United States. Addressed to Mr. Aryeh Gelman, President of the World Mizrachi Movement. Dated Wednesday, between Keseh and Asor (the Ten Days of Repentance), 5731 [1970]. The letter was sent from Boston to Israel during the Aseret Yemei Teshuvah (Ten Days of Awe), and is written in an elevated, poetic Hebrew style, befitting its distinguished recipient – the president of the global Mizrachi movement, of which Rabbi Soloveitchik was a leading spiritual figure. Text of the Letter: “To my honored and long-time friend, the esteemed Mr. Aryeh Gelman… On the day of the Great Fast, I extend to him my heartfelt blessing — that he be blessed with the sanctity of the day and its exalted spirit… With radiant countenance and endless heavenly grace… May G-d inscribe him for good — for a year of life and peace, health of body, and satisfaction of heart; may he merit to greet our righteous Messiah and behold the High Priest in his sacred service. Rabbi Joseph Dov HaLevi Soloveitchik (1903–1993) – known by the acronym “HaRav” and “the Rav of Boston, ” was one of the greatest Torah luminaries of the 20th century, son of Rabbi Moshe and grandson of Rabbi Chaim of Brisk. Named after his great-grandfather, the Beit HaLevi, he served as Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva University and the spiritual leader of Modern Orthodoxy in America, profoundly influencing generations of rabbis, scholars, and laymen alike. Thousands attended his annual Yahrzeit Shiur in memory of his father — a four- to five-hour lecture delivered without notes, displaying his unmatched analytical brilliance. He emigrated to the United States in 1932 and soon became rabbi of the Orthodox community in Boston, a role he maintained alongside his position as Rosh Yeshiva. In 1939 he founded the Heichal Rabbeinu Chaim HaLevi Yeshiva in Boston, later incorporated into Yeshiva Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan (RIETS). During a 1935 visit to the Land of Israel, Rabbi Soloveitchik met Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook and delivered a monumental lecture at Yeshivat Merkaz HaRav, attended by veterans of the Volozhin Yeshiva and students from Chevron. Rabbi Moshe Zvi Neria described it vividly: “The memory of Volozhin stood before us in all its splendor and majesty… With clarity and confidence, he began with questions on the Gemara, on the Rambam… Truly, the ‘Beit HaLevi’ did not disappoint.” In 1960, despite great public pressure, Rabbi Soloveitchik declined to run for the position of Chief Rabbi of Israel, choosing instead to continue his life’s mission of teaching Torah and shaping the spiritual life of American Jewry.
