Hand-Painted Wimpel – France, 1872 - Hand-Painted Wimpel – Aryeh Zvi son of Shimon Bigar, 1872  A magnificent and rare hand-painted wimpel, created with delicate and lively artistry to celebrate the birth of Aryeh Zvi, son of Shimon Bigar, born on 7 Cheshvan 5633 (1872). The inscription is colorful and graceful, with letters decorated in blue, white, and red – the colors of the French flag – artistically integrated into the word “Bar”, a poetic allusion to the spirit of life and to the early period of Jewish emancipation in Europe. Some letters are shaped as animals, fish, birds, flowers, and a deer, creating a vibrant, childlike world infused with touching folk art charm. At the center of the wimpel appear striking symbolic illustrations: an open Torah scroll inscribed “This is the Torah which Moses set before the children of Israel, ” and beside it a festive wedding canopy, on whose roof appears a circle with the French flag, and between its pillars the inscription “M.T. – Mazal Tov”, a heartfelt wish that the child will grow to Torah and marriage.
