5 one-dollar bills distributed by the Lubavitcher Rebbe on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of his leadership – 10 Shevat 5740 (1980). - Five one-dollar bills with consecutive serial numbers (from a set of thirty consecutive bills) given by the Lubavitcher Rebbe on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of his leadership of the Chabad movement – 10 Shevat 5710–5740 (1950–1980). The Story Behind the Notes In the year 5740 (1980), on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the Lubavitcher Rebbe Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson’s leadership of the Chabad movement—following the passing of his father-in-law, the previous Rebbe Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson—a special and emotional lottery was organized by the Chabad community of Strasbourg, France. The purpose of the lottery was to select one member of the community who would travel to New York to represent the community before the Rebbe on the 10th of Shevat 5740 (January 28, 1980), the date marking thirty years of his leadership. Each participant contributed a symbolic sum of about ten dollars, submitted his name and his mother’s name, and was entered into the list of participants. The drawing was conducted as follows: The participants’ names were written on small slips of paper and placed in one hat, while an equal number of blank slips—one of which bore the word “winner”—were placed in another hat. A person drew one slip from each hat simultaneously. Each time, the white slip was examined; when the one marked “winner” appeared, the name on the corresponding slip from the other hat revealed the chosen delegate. That year, Moshe Leib was selected to represent the Strasbourg community before the Rebbe. He traveled to New York carrying the full list of participants, which he presented to the Rebbe’s secretariat, and they, in turn, delivered it to the Rebbe himself. When Moshe Leib stood before the Rebbe, the Rebbe handed him a packet containing thirty one-dollar bills, marking the thirtieth anniversary of his leadership. The Rebbe instructed him explicitly to divide the sum as follows: $15 for charity, on behalf of himself and all the members of the community. $15 to purchase drinks, in order to hold a communal l’chaim celebration upon his return to France. Naturally, Moshe Leib kept the original dollar bills given to him by the Rebbe as sacred mementos and donated an equivalent sum for charity and for the l’chaim, exactly as the Rebbe had directed.
