Set of Yalkut Shimoni. Polonnoye, 1805. An early Hasidic edition - Yalkut Shimoni. Two parts. Polonnoye, 1805. An important Hasidic edition, accompanied by approbations from first-generation Hasidic masters: Volume I – The Five Books of the Torah Volume II – Prophets and Writings With approbations by the holy R. Avraham Dov Auerbach, Av Beit Din of Polonnoye and Khmelnyk, son-in-law of the author of Toldot Ya‘akov Yosef (whose matchmaker was the Baal Shem Tov, who even “ate kest” at his table); and by the Av Beit Din of Ostroh, the kabbalist R. Betzalel, son of R. Meir Margoliot, a disciple of the Baal Shem Tov. The book was printed by the printer R. Joseph Cohen, as stated in the approbations. On the title pages appears the printer’s emblem of Samuel S.G.L., who was initially Joseph Cohen’s partner. The partnership later dissolved, and in some copies the name “Samuel the printer” was erased from the printer’s emblem. The present set is one of these “erased” variants [photographs of the title pages supplied]. See: M. Wunder, Hebrew Printing in Polonnoye, Alei Sefer 5 (1978), p. 125. An interesting typographical feature: the opening page of Genesis was printed twice, with typographical differences. In the first printing, the word Bereshit appears within an ornate illustrated frame; in the second printing, within a frame identical to that used at the openings of the other books. Part I (Torah): [1], 272 leaves. Part II (Prophets and Writings): [1], 182 [should read: 282], 450 leaves. Some leaves are bluish. Dimensions: approx. 33.5 cm. Condition: fair to good. Numerous stamps. Age staining and wormholes.
