A 13-page booklet written and printed at the height of the heated public controversy over the recruitment of women to the IDF and to National Service. This document constitutes a living testimony to the central dispute that cut across Israel’s young society—the ultra-Orthodox, religious-Zionist, and secular publics—around questions of National Service and the enlistment of women into the IDF. Rabbi Keteriel Fishel Tchorosh (1897–1979)—Rabbi of the Shapira neighborhood in Tel Aviv, head of the city’s kashrut supervision, a member of the Council of the Chief Rabbinate, and one of the leaders of Religious Zionism. He played a significant role in shaping religious-Zionist public positions on major civic issues, especially regarding women’s recruitment and service. This document is a rare source for understanding the core of the historic debate in Israel and the manner in which Religious Zionism sought to bridge religious values with the demands of the young state. 13 pages, 33 cm.
