“Misped Rav” (A Great Eulogy). Lemberg, [1815] Only Edition - “Misped Rav” (A Great Eulogy), for Rabbi Meir Kristianpfaller, Av Beit Din of Brody, by Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margolies. Lemberg, 5575 [1815]. On the title page: “For a great rabbi has fallen from us… our master… R. Meir, of blessed memory… and all the wise of heart eulogized him… and I too shall do so… Ephraim.” The title page further states that the price of the book—half a ruble—was designated for charity, for the Bikur Cholim society of Brody, for the soul of the late gaon. An eulogy delivered by Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margolies in the Great Synagogue of Brody following the passing of Rabbi Meir Kristianpfaller. Rabbi Meir Kristianpfaller (c. 1740–1815) studied at the yeshiva of Rabbi Shmelke of Nikolsburg. He succeeded his father in the rabbinate of Bialkamin, and later served as rabbi of Galina and Kristianpol. He held the rabbinate of the city of Brody for approximately thirty years. The Author: Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margolies (1761–1828), author of Beit Ephraim, Mateh Ephraim, and other works. One of the great later authorities and leading halakhic decisors of his generation, and among the sages of the famed Kloiz of Brody. Already in his lifetime he was recognized as one of the foremost halakhic authorities, and his works were widely disseminated—especially Sha‘arei Ephraim on the laws of Torah reading, and Mateh Ephraim on the laws of the High Holy Days. These became foundational texts in their fields and appeared in numerous editions, some with annotations and appendices by later scholars. Torah and greatness were united at his table. Though not himself a Hasid, he was highly esteemed by the leaders of Hasidism. He ordained the author of Divrei Chaim for rabbinic authority and was among those who endorsed Likutei Moharan, together with the Seer of Lublin. In the opening of his approbation to Likutei Moharan, he is described in exalted terms as “the eminent gaon, renowned throughout distant lands and seas… the great man among giants… Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margolies of Brody, of blessed memory.” The Chatam Sofer said of him in his eulogy: “Truly, in him Torah and greatness were found together, and in his greatness there was humility… he was known to be a world-class giant, a father and chariot of Israel and its horsemen… and each day his teachings were heard in our study halls.”
