Presented here is the first edition of the renowned Hasidic work by Rabbi Moshe Elikim Beriah of Kozhnitz, son of the celebrated Rabbi Israel Hopstein of Kozhnitz, among the most important Hasidic leaders of all generations. Rabbi Moshe Elikim Beriah (1757–1828) was a foremost disciple of his father, the Maggid of Kozhnitz, and of Rabbi Zusha of Anipoli. Throughout his life he lived in great humility and concealment. During his father’s lifetime he was scarcely known, and even after his father’s passing the Hasidim were hesitant to accept his leadership—until The Seer of Lublin proclaimed at the funeral, paraphrasing the verse, “When the Ark set forward, Moses said, ” thereby appointing him as his father’s successor. He authored many works, including Be’er Moshe, Da‘at Moshe, Binat Moshe, Matteh Moshe, Kohelet Moshe, Pirkei Moshe, and others. This book was printed during the lifetime of the author’s son, the Admor Rabbi Elazar of Kozhnitz, and is the first work by the author to be published. In Likkutei Mahar”a (to Psalms 119), the son recounts that during his father’s lifetime many opposed him, claiming he could only recite Psalms and derisively calling him “Tehillim-zoger” (a Psalms-reciter). Yet once Be’er Moshe was printed, all critics were silenced, and it became evident to all that he was filled with deep mastery and sharp analysis across nearly the entire Torah.
