The author, Rabbi Avraham David Wahrman, the renowned rabbi of Buchach (1771–1841), was among the great Torah scholars, Hasidic leaders, and halakhic authorities of his generation. After his marriage he drew close to Hasidism and became associated with the leading rebbes of his era, including Rabbi Levi Yitzḥak of Berdichev, Rabbi Moshe Leib of Sasov, Rabbi Ḥayyim of Chernovitz, and Rabbi Zvi Hirsch of Nadvorna. In 1814 he was appointed Av Beit Din of Buchach, succeeding his father-in-law and teacher Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Kara. He was famed as an exceptional genius and righteous figure. He authored numerous halakhic works: Eshel Avraham on Shulḥan Arukh, Orach Ḥayyim (printed many times); Da‘at Kedoshim on Yoreh De‘ah; Ezer Mekudash on Even ha-Ezer; Kesef ha-Kedashim on Ḥoshen Mishpat; as well as Birkat David, a work in the spirit of Hasidism.
