Shemó Moshe. Smyrna (Izmir) [1874]. Author’s Dedication! - Shemó Moshe – Responsa on Halakhah arranged according to the Arba‘ah Turim, by Rabbi Moshe Pardo. Smyrna (Izmir), 5634 [1874]. On the title page appears a handwritten dedication by the author. The author, Rabbi Moshe Pardo (c. 1810–1888), was a grandson of Rabbi Yitzchak Abulafia on his mother’s side and a great-grandson of the Chida on his father’s side. Born in Jerusalem, he served as a dayan under the Rishon LeZion Rabbi Avraham Ashkenazi, who provided an approbation to the present work. In 5630 [1870] he departed on a rabbinic mission to North Africa; on his return he passed through Alexandria, where he was urged to accept—and did accept—the rabbinate of the city, leaving a lasting imprint on its communal organization and customs. From there his halakhic authority extended widely, and inquiries reached him from Jewish communities throughout the Diaspora. He also authored Tzedek u’Mishpat, Hora’ah de-Beit Din, Shir Chadash, and glosses to the work of his ancestor Rabbi David Pardo, author of Chasdei David. Collation: [2], 218 leaves. Size: 29.5 cm.
