The first volume to be published in the Yalkut Yosef series — a series that today comprises 41 volumes. On the front endpaper appears a fine five-line dedication in the elegant autograph hand of Maran Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, who signs the dedication with the title “the author” (!) — an almost unique expression written by one who is not formally the author, reflecting the sense of responsibility and authority Maran assumed over Yalkut Yosef. The dedication is addressed to Major General Gad Navon, a senior figure in Israel’s defense establishment, creating a fascinating meeting point between the spiritual leadership of Sephardic Jewry and the upper echelons of the military establishment — testimony to Maran’s expanding public stature already in the early 1970s. This copy, which represents both the beginning of the halakhic life’s work of the Rishon LeZion Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef and bears a personal signed dedication by his father, Maran Rabbi Ovadia Yosef himself, constitutes a rare item for collectors and admirers of Maran. Maran Rabbi Ovadia Yosef [5680–5774 / 1920–2013], Chief Rabbi of Israel (Rishon LeZion), spiritual leader and President of the Council of Torah Sages of the Shas party, the foremost Sephardic rabbinic authority of his generation, was widely known as the “posek of the generation.” His era marked a golden age for Sephardic Jewry in the Land of Israel.
