A long letter in the holy handwriting of the gaon Rabbi Shaul Brach — Av Bet Din of Košice and Kráľ - Shaul, Chosen of God A long letter, spanning two pages (approx. 250 words), written entirely in the holy hand and bearing the signature of the eminent gaon Rabbi Shaul Brach zt”l, Av Bet Din of Košice, Kráľ, and other towns, and among the foremost rabbis of Hungary. Date: 1912. The letter opens with the words: “My beloved, my sister’s son, the honorable David, may he live, ” and is addressed to the author’s nephew. The letter is written in Yiddish. Rabbi Shaul Brach’s handwriting is known to be particularly difficult to decipher, and unfortunately it was not possible to fully unravel its contents; it is possible that the letter contains previously unknown teachings. Nevertheless, based on a general examination of the structure of the letter and recurring terms, it appears with high probability that it deals with matters related to the printing of the author’s early books, including instructions regarding copying, editing, and preparation for print. Rabbi Shaul Brach was born in Nitra in 1865. He studied Torah in Chust under Rabbi Meir Arik (Maharam Shik), and later in Mattersdorf under the author of Ḥatam Sofer. He was counted among the leading rabbis of his generation in Hungary. He served in the rabbinate of Megendorf, Kráľ, and finally Košice (Kassa), by which name he became especially known. After his departure from Kráľ, Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum of Satmar succeeded him in office. Rabbi Shaul Brach founded a renowned yeshiva and trained many disciples. He authored numerous Torah works and passed away in 1940. His biography was published in the book Shaul Beḥir HaShem. Two pages. Entirely in his handwriting and bearing his signature. Good condition.
