Two parts. First edition of Pitchei Teshuvah. With an owner’s signature and handwritten annotations by Rabbi Yosef Yaffe, Av Beit Din of Slant and later of Manchester. Rabbi Yosef Yaffe (5605–5658 / 1845–1898) was born in Grodzh, Lithuania, to his father Rabbi Moshe Yaffe, Av Beit Din. He married in Raseiniai and devoted himself to Torah study alongside Rabbi Alexander Moshe Lapidot, corresponding from there with Rabbi Yosef Zechariah Stern, Av Beit Din of Shavli (see Zekher Yehosef, O.C. §§85, 124). From 5634 he served as Av Beit Din of Pakrai; from 5649 as Av Beit Din of Grodzh, succeeding his father (his place in the Grodzh rabbinate was later filled by Rabbi Itchele of Ponovezh). He subsequently served in the rabbinate of Slant, and from 5653 until his passing on 1 Tammuz 5658 served as rabbi of Manchester. Among his published works: Yosef Be’ur on Shir HaShirim (Vilna, 5641); Alim LeTerufah—a dialogue between intellect and inclination (Manchester, 5655); his commentaries on the weekly Torah portions, printed in the Passover Haggadah with Haggadah Yafeh by members of the Yaffe family (Bnei Brak, 5759); and additional novellae published in periodicals.
