Asher le-Shlomo. Smyrna (Izmir). Luxurious binding with a dedication by the author’s father - Asher le-Shlomo. Novellae on Ha-Nesher ha-Gadol (Maimonides), with sermons, by Rabbi Shlomo Yaffe Ashkenazi. Smyrna (Izmir), 1876. Only edition. The author passed away at a young age, and the book was brought to press by his father, Rabbi Yaakov Yaffe, who contributed a lengthy introduction. Rabbi Shlomo Yaffe Ashkenazi (d. 1868) was the son of Rabbi Yaakov Yaffe, author of Yaakov Selah and Yaakov Yismach. He was among the sages and rabbis of Smyrna and studied under Rabbi Abraham Palaggi, who wrote in his approbation to this work: “A beautiful delicacy, innovated in his goodness by the complete and comprehensive sage, thoroughly versed in the laws of ritual slaughter; one cannot refrain from reciting Hallel over him” (Arzei ha-Levanon, no. 2124). Bound in an original, ornate gilt leather binding, characteristic of the period, with an inscription on the cover reading: A gift sent by the author’s father to the esteemed and complete sage, our master Rabbi Yehuda Algazi, may his light shine, dated 1877.
