First Edition - The illustrious author was among the leading Torah scholars of his generation. In this work he conducts halakhic correspondence with the foremost sages of the era, including Rabbi David Tabeli of Lissa; Rabbi Meir Posner, author of Beit Meir; Rabbi Pinchas HaLevi Horowitz, author of Ha-Hafla’ah; and the Gaon Rabbi Isaiah Pick-Berlin. From the year [1781] he served as Rabbi of Rotterdam until his passing in [1806]. In responsum no. 41 appears a reply concerning money sent from Philadelphia in the United States, dealing with a benefactor who sent charity to a pauper who later became wealthy. The responsum opens: “Concerning the matter of which His Excellency the honorable benefactor informed me, that the noble donor R. Ḥ. from Philadelphia inclined his ear to my words and to my favorable advocacy on behalf of so-and-so, and generously donated to him…” The benefactor mentioned is Haym Salomon, one of the key figures in the founding of the United States and among its leading financiers; according to tradition, he was instrumental in securing the funding for the War of Independence against the British on behalf of George Washington.
