Maḥzor in Ashkenazic Vernacular according to the Ashkenaz and Poland Rite (Krovets). Amsterdam, [1721]. Rare - A rare and distinctive maḥzor in the Ashkenazic vernacular, according to the Ashkenaz and Poland rite, printed in Amsterdam in 5481 [1721]. The volume contains the prayer services for the High Holidays and festivals, together with the scrolls of Song of Songs, Ruth, and Ecclesiastes — entirely in Yiddish, printed in Tsene-rene type, with no parallel Hebrew text. This format clearly indicates that the book was intended primarily for women, or for readers not fluent in Hebrew, and it constitutes an important testimony to the spiritual and religious world of Ashkenazic women in the early 18th century, as well as to the broader effort to make prayer and Scripture accessible in the vernacular. Opposite the title page appears an impressive woodcut depicting the sounding of the shofar, a didactic and evocative illustration enhancing the devotional experience of the Days of Awe. On the final page there is a printer’s advertisement, a noteworthy bibliographical detail shedding light on the marketing and distribution of prayer books in this period. The book is recorded in Ginzey Yisrael – Hollman Collection, no. 327, and is regarded as a particularly rare item. [1], 156 leaves. 22 cm. Wide margins. Condition: Very good.
