First edition - Rabbi Moses Almosnino (c. 1516–1581), among the leading sages of Salonika, served as rabbi of two congregations in the city. He studied at the yeshiva of Rabbi Joseph Taitatzak. Renowned as an outstanding preacher as well as a decisive halakhic authority, he sought to reconcile and unite the deeply divided communities of Salonika. In 1566 he traveled to Constantinople to intercede with the Ottoman sultan on behalf of the Jews of Salonika. He also authored Tefillah le-Moshe, Pirkei Moshe, Ma’amatz Koach, and other works.
