By the scholar Rabbi Shmuel Ozida. Amsterdam, [1710]. Rabbi Shmuel Ozida was among the earliest disciples of the Ari and a colleague of Rabbi Moshe Cordovero. He was born in Safed to Rabbi Yitzḥak di Ozida and studied in the academy of Rabbi Elisha Gallico. He later founded a major yeshiva devoted to both the revealed and esoteric teachings of the Torah. He is best known for his celebrated work Midrash Shmuel on Pirkei Avot. After the death of the Ari in 5332 [1572], he studied Kabbalah under Rabbi Ḥayyim Vital, and in 5335 [1575] he was among the signatories to the deed of commitment of the Ari’s disciples recognizing Rabbi Ḥayyim Vital as the Ari’s spiritual successor.
