Me’or Einayim, novellae by Rabbi Josiah Pinto on the second part of Ein Yaakov. Mantua, 1743 - Brought to press by Rabbi Moshe Najara of Safed. With important approbations by the rabbis of the Galilee and the rabbis of Mantua. Rabbi Josiah Pinto — known as the RIF (1565–1648) — was born in Damascus to his father Rabbi Yosef, a descendant of the Spanish exiles. He initially studied in the yeshiva of Rabbi Jacob Abulafia, and later studied Kabbalah under Rabbi Chaim Vital, who subsequently became his relative by marriage when Rabbi Chaim Vital’s son, Rabbi Samuel Vital, married Rabbi Josiah’s daughter. In 1625 he immigrated to the Land of Israel, residing for a period in Jerusalem and later in Safed. He subsequently returned to Damascus, where he was appointed rabbi of the community. It is noteworthy that his grandson is the renowned kabbalist Rabbi Josiah Pinto (the second), known as “the rabbi of the world’s wealthy, ” who is also called, like his grandfather, by the title RIF. He currently serves, among his prominent roles, as head of the Shuva Israel communities in Ashdod and Manhattan, and as Chief Rabbi of Morocco by appointment of the King. [2], 98 leaves; 22.5 cm.
