“Through the Power of Faith One Can Cross the Great Sea” — A Rare Hasidic Epistle by the Rebbe of Toldos Aharon zy”a - “…But know, my beloved son, that the ultimate purpose of every person is the trials.” A rare and wondrous Hasidic letter of guidance, approximately 250 words, by the holy Rebbe of Toldos Aharon, the righteous gaon Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Kahn zy”a, addressed to a disciple seeking to ascend in Torah, reverence, and Hasidic devotion, and to be saved from the temptations of the times and the prevailing רוח התקופה. The letter is written entirely in his holy hand and bears his signature. Jerusalem, the eve of Monday, Parashat Bamidbar [year not stated]. This is not a letter of greetings or a mere blessing, but rather a comprehensive epistle of moral instruction—a kind of Hasidic manifesto. Though written to a private individual, it constitutes a general “Iggeret Mussar, ” charting a clear path for all who seek to ascend the road that leads to the House of God. Letters of this type are exceptionally rare among the manuscripts of Hasidic tzaddikim. The Rebbe lays out for his disciple a structured doctrine in the service of God, addressing the struggle with trials of the inclination, thoughts of despair, and inner fears: On trials, he writes: “Trials are imagination, like a dog chasing one who flees from it; if he stands against it and throws stones—the dog runs away. So it is with trials: if one submits to them, they rule over him; but if one strengthens himself against them, there is Divine assistance, and they flee.” On thoughts of despair: “The answer to everything is this: God is Master over all deeds—there is a Creator in the world, and He did, does, and will do all deeds.” On fears: “One need only pray: ‘Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God’; and through the power of faith there is no need to fear at all.” The Rebbe of Toldos Aharon was not like other rebbes who conduct their leadership primarily through festive tables and the receiving of petitions; rather, he was a demanding educator, striking at the core of his Hasidim and commanding them: Grow! In this letter he accompanies his disciple step by step along the paths of life and the service of the heart. Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Kahn (1914–1997), among the most prominent Hasidic rebbes and founder of the Toldos Aharon Hasidic dynasty. Renowned for his sanctity, asceticism, and divine inspiration. A disciple in the Satmar yeshiva of Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum, where he drew close to the sacred circle of his future father-in-law, devoted to pure service of God. After the passing of his father-in-law, the renowned Rebbe Rabbi Aharon Rata (“Rabbi Ahar’le”), the majority of the Hasidim chose him as successor and leader. During his tenure the Hasidic movement flourished greatly, establishing centers in Beit Shemesh and New York. The Rebbe was regarded as one of the foremost opponents of Zionism.
