Shemesh Tzedakah. Venice, [1743]. Two parts. First edition. Fine copy - Shemesh Tzedakah, responsa by Rabbi Samson Morpurgo of Ancona. Venice, [1743]. First edition, in two parts. The work includes several responsa dealing with the halakhic controversy regarding the wearing of tefillin on Chol HaMoed. Each part has a separate title page. Both title pages feature copper engravings depicting Moses and Aaron, and David beheading Goliath. Rabbi Samson Morpurgo [5441–5500; 1681–1740], rabbi of Ancona, was among the foremost rabbis and decisors of his era; his rulings are cited by leading halakhic authorities of subsequent generations. A central figure in Italian Jewry, he fought vigorously against Sabbateanism and was involved in the controversies surrounding the writings of the Ramchal. During a plague in Italy in 5490 [1730], he mobilized to save lives and also served as a volunteer physician. Part I: Orach Chaim and Yoreh De‘ah. [5], 117 leaves.
