In the introduction, the author writes: “Let not the reader suspect that I have come here to wage war against our master, Heaven forbid…”—a reference to Rabbi Elijah of Vilna (the Gaon of Vilna), upon whom he frequently raises objections and upholds textual readings that the Gaon had rejected. The author, the Admor Rabbi Yitzḥak Isaac Yehudah Yeḥiel of Komarno [5566–5634 / 1806–1874], was the nephew and foremost disciple of Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch of Zidichov, known as the “Minister of the House of the Zohar, ” and a disciple of Rabbi Avraham Yehoshua Heshel of Apt (the Ohev Yisrael) and Rabbi Israel of Ruzhin, who spoke very highly of him. Beyond being among the leading Hasidic rebbes of his generation, followed by a large community of Hasidim and renowned as a wonder-working tzaddik, he was also known for his great genius in the revealed Torah and especially in Kabbalah. He authored works in both the revealed and the esoteric realms and served in practice as rabbi in the towns of Zidichov and Komarno. An uncommon book.
