Item Overview

Description:

A Rare and Fascinating Letter from the Leading Rosh Yeshiva of His Generation, Maran the Gaon Rabbi Shimon Shkop
A Long and Important Autograph Letter (Over 100 Words), Extremely Rare, Entirely in the Holy Hand and Signed by the Architect of the Yeshiva Method of Study as Practiced to This Day —
Maran the Gaon Rabbi Shimon Yehuda HaKohen Shkop, Author of Shaarei Yosher and Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Shaar HaTorah in Grodno. Grodno (Lithuania), 6 Adar 1925.

A remarkable autograph document penned and signed by Rabbi Shimon Shkop, one of the greatest roshei yeshiva of all generations and a central architect of the analytic method that reshaped advanced Talmudic study in the Lithuanian yeshiva world.

The letter was addressed to the Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem—and later the first Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi of Eretz Israel—Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook. In his letter, the author of Shaarei Yosher turns to Rabbi Kook with a request that he endeavor to obtain an entry permit to Eretz Israel for one of the Grodno yeshiva students, whose soul had long yearned from his youth to ascend to the Holy Land and “grace her soil.”

Particularly noteworthy are the exalted titles with which Rabbi Shimon Shkop addresses Rabbi Kook—“Pe’er HaDor” (“Glory of the Generation”), among others—an element of special historical interest. At that time, fierce opposition to Rabbi Kook’s rabbinic leadership prevailed in certain ultra-Orthodox circles. Only a year earlier, a delegation of leading Polish rebbes headed by the Imrei Emes of Gur had come to examine Rabbi Kook’s path and views in light of accusations spread abroad. Five years prior, in 1920, a sharply worded letter had even been dispatched from the Jerusalem Rabbinical Court to Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzensky, expressing strong criticism of Rabbi Kook’s writings and leadership.

Rabbi Shimon Yehuda HaKohen Shkop (1860–1939) was among the greatest heads of yeshivot in modern history. A disciple of Rabbi Chaim Soloveitchik at the Volozhin Yeshiva, he was guided in the path of profound analytical study. At age 24 he was appointed rosh yeshiva in Telz (founded by his uncle Rabbi Eliezer Gordon), where he disseminated his innovative analytic method—an approach that would conquer the Torah world and remain dominant to this day. Among his prominent students there was Rabbi Elchanan Wasserman.

In 1920 he was appointed head of Yeshivat Shaar HaTorah in Grodno. His principal works include Shaarei Yosher, Ma’arechet HaKinyanim, and Chiddushei Rabbi Shimon Yehuda HaKohen.
