Description:
A Moving Letter from the Great Yeshiva Leader Rabbi Elchanan Wasserman, Author of Kovetz Shiurim, to a Supporter of the Torah World
An Emotional Letter of Blessing in the Handwriting of the Gaon and Tzaddik Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Gutman (perished in the Holocaust, HY”D), Mashgiach and Administrator of the Ohel Torah Yeshiva in Baranovichi, bearing the full signature of the holy Gaon Rabbi Elchanan Bunem Wasserman, one of the greatest yeshiva heads of all generations and author of the foundational series Kovetz Shiurim. Baranovichi, Shevat 5695 (1935).

The letter is addressed to the philanthropist Mrs. Pesia [Jenny] Feigin, who was well known for her support of the Lithuanian yeshivot. In historical sources one may find letters from many leading Torah sages addressed to her, expressing their gratitude for her steadfast support of those devoted to Torah study.
Unlike other yeshiva heads, who out of modesty would often address their letters to her husband, R. Natan Feigin, or to the couple jointly — here Rabbi Elchanan addresses her personally, with direct appreciation.
The holy Gaon Rabbi Elchanan Wasserman — whose blessings were renowned for not returning empty — blesses the lady that she merit to continue and increase her many acts of kindness:
“איר זאלט זוכה זיין צו שטיצען די תורה לויט אייער פאלאנג”
(May you merit to support the Torah according to your means.)
Rabbi Elchanan Bunem Wasserman (1875–1941), head of the Ohel Torah Yeshiva in Baranovichi and one of the most renowned Torah scholars of all generations. His analytical works Kovetz He’arot and Kovetz Shiurim, together with his distinctive method of Talmudic analysis, remain foundational assets of the yeshiva world to this day. Rabbi Elchanan was a disciple of the Gaon Rabbi Shimon Shkop and the close disciple and right hand of the saintly author of the Chafetz Chaim. The account of his martyrdom al Kiddush Hashem, as one of the “Ten Martyrs of the Kingdom, ” deeply stirred Jewish hearts: while engaged in the study of the laws of sanctification of God’s Name, he was taken to his death at the Seventh Fort near the Kovno Ghetto.
The Gaon and Tzaddik Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Gutman (perished in the Holocaust, HY”D), Mashgiach and administrator of the Ohel Torah Yeshiva in Baranovichi, served as Rabbi Elchanan’s right hand in the management of the yeshiva. He acted as the spiritual supervisor responsible for the students’ moral and spiritual guidance, while also serving as the practical administrator who devotedly cared for all the students’ material needs. A distinguished Torah scholar and an elevated personality, he would occasionally deliver lectures in the yeshiva and substitute for one of the other lecturers. He also served as the prayer leader during the High Holidays and was known as the “angel” who would call out to each student: “Grow! Grow!”
[1] Leaf, 21 × 14 cm. Official letterhead of the Ohel Torah Yeshiva, with the signature and stamp of Rabbi Elchanan Wasserman.
