Item Overview
Description:
Responsa of the Rivash. Constantinople, 1546–1547. First Edition. A Foundational Work.
“Responsa of the Rabbi… Rabbeinu Yitzchak ben Sheshet, of blessed memory” – Responsa Rivash. Constantinople, Eliezer Soncino Press, 1546–1547. First edition.
“Responsa of the Rabbi… Rabbeinu Yitzchak ben Sheshet, of blessed memory” – Responsa Rivash. Constantinople, Eliezer Soncino Press, 1546–1547. First edition.
One of the foundational works of responsa literature and halachah. Maran the Joseph Karo frequently cites his rulings.
Rabbi Isaac ben Sheshet (the Rivash), among the concluding sages of the Rishonim period, was born in Spain in 1326 and passed away in Algiers in 1408. His foremost teacher was Rabbeinu Nissim ben Reuven (the Ran). He also received Torah instruction from Rabbi Chasdai Crescas and Rabbi Peretz HaKohen.
The book was printed in separate quires and distributed to purchasers on Sabbaths in the synagogue, as was customary in Constantinople at that time. A halachic debate arose among the rabbis of Constantinople who opposed this practice (see: A. Yaari, Hebrew Printing in Constantinople, Jerusalem 1967, p. 103, no. 145).
Stefansky, Sifrei Yesod 269.
Ownership signature on title page.
An impressive copy.
The body of the book is complete, including the [10] leaves of indices arranged according to the order of halachot, as well as the errata leaves; however, it lacks the [11] leaves of indices arranged according to the simanim in the book. 29.5 cm.
Very fine condition. Minor restoration to the margins of the title page. Some light age staining. Magnificent modern half-leather binding.
