Venice, Daniel Bomberg Press, 1547. Second edition. Large-format copy. An attributed copy bearing signatures of rabbis from the Latis (Latish) family. Also present is a trimmed signature, apparently of a rabbi in Izmir named Moshe ben Rabbi Avraham Gallico, an Italian sage who relocated to Izmir. The volume is filled with dozens of handwritten corrections and references, apparently in the hand of Moshe Gallico. The author, Isaac Arama (c. 1420–1494), was among the leading sages of Spain in the generation of the Expulsion and became renowned throughout the Jewish world for his monumental work Akedat Yitzchak. Akedat Yitzchak is a major fifteenth-century philosophical and homiletical commentary on the Torah. Composed during a period of intense religious pressure upon Spanish Jewry, it was intended to fortify Jewish faith in the face of philosophical challenges and Christian missionary efforts. The work is structured into 105 distinct “gates” (she’arim), each devoted to an in-depth exposition of the Torah’s verses in breadth and depth. The Chida wrote of it: “All the homiletical works of earlier generations drank faithfully from its waters and entered its gates with thanksgiving.” Supplementary material regarding the author and the work is included. 309 leaves. 37 cm.
