10 Rare “Rebbe Dollars” Distributed by the Menachem Mendel Schneerson - 10 Consecutive “Rebbe Dollars” – From a Group of 30 Consecutive Notes Distributed by the Menachem Mendel Schneerson Marking the 30th Anniversary of His Leadership – 10 Shevat 5710–5740 (1950–1980) Ten consecutive one-dollar bills (from an original group of thirty consecutive notes) distributed by the Lubavitcher Rebbe on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of his nesiut, following the passing of his father-in-law, the Previous Rebbe, Joseph Isaac Schneersohn. The Story In 5740 (1980), to mark thirty years since the Rebbe assumed leadership, the Chabad community of Strasbourg, France, organized a special and moving lottery. The purpose of the lottery was to select one member of the community who would travel to New York to represent Strasbourg before the Rebbe on 10 Shevat 5740 (January 28, 1980), the exact date marking thirty years since he accepted the mantle of leadership. Participation required a symbolic contribution of approximately ten dollars. Each participant submitted his name and mother’s name, and all names were recorded. A formal drawing was then conducted: Participants’ names were written on small slips and placed into one hat. In a second hat were placed blank slips, one of which bore the word “Winner.” One person simultaneously drew a slip from each hat. Each time, the blank slip was examined first—until the slip marked “Winner” was drawn. At that moment, the corresponding name drawn from the second hat was revealed as the winner. That year, Moshe Leib was selected and chosen to travel to New York as the community’s representative. He brought with him the full list of participants, which he submitted to the Rebbe’s secretariat; it was then conveyed directly to the Rebbe. When he stood before the Rebbe, the Rebbe presented him with a bundle of thirty one-dollar bills, symbolizing the thirty years of leadership. The Rebbe instructed him explicitly to divide the amount as follows: 15 dollars for charity – on behalf of himself and all members of the community. 15 dollars to purchase refreshments – in order to hold a communal “L’chaim” upon his return to France. Moshe Leib preserved the original bills given to him by the Rebbe as sacred keepsakes and, in their stead, donated an equivalent sum to charity and for the communal gathering, in accordance with the Rebbe’s directive. Each note bears an inscription recording the date of receipt: Yud Shevat 5740 (10 Shevat 5740).
