Mighty Holy Blessings from the Lubavitcher Rebbe on His Birthday – the Luminous Day of 11 Nissan! - “The Lord said to me: You are My son; this day I have begotten you. Ask of Me – and I shall give!” A wondrous letter, laden with exalted blessings, from the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, containing heart-stirring benedictions: “freedom from worries, ” “serving God with joy and gladness of heart, ” and “to carry this freedom and joy throughout all the days of the entire year” – together with four words (!) in his own holy handwriting and his signature. The letter was written on the luminous day of 11 Nissan 5728 – the Rebbe’s birthday. The present letter was written, as noted, on the Rebbe’s birthday, a day of immeasurable Chassidic significance. It is regarded as a time especially conducive to the fulfillment of blessings uttered on that day, in accordance with the well-known Chassidic teaching based on the verse in Psalms: “This day I have begotten you – ask of Me and I shall give” – that on a person’s birthday, his blessings are effective. All the more so a letter containing the blessings of the leader of the generation, whose every word does not return void. In this rare letter, the Rebbe blesses nearly all that the human heart desires – materially and spiritually alike. He opens with a blessing for “true freedom” – for we are all enslaved to the hardships and trials of life – and explains: “freedom from worries in material matters and from worries in spiritual matters.” Complete freedom – without anxieties over livelihood and health, and without spiritual concerns that consume both body and soul. From this freedom flows the great blessing: “serving God with joy and gladness of heart, ” constant and unceasing service, “all day and all night, as it is said: ‘In all your ways know Him.’” The Rebbe places his holy finger upon one of the gravest afflictions of our generation – “worries” and “anxieties” that gnaw at a person from within – and blesses with precise clarity: “freedom from worries.” Where there are no worries, there is joy; and where there is joy, there is service of God. Yet the Rebbe does not suffice with this, and adds a world-embracing blessing: “to carry this freedom and joy throughout all the days of the entire year” – a whole year of joy! Beside the printed word “With blessing, ” the Rebbe added in his own handwriting the deeply meaningful word: “With honor” – true, inward, Jewish honor. He concludes his letter with a blessing so urgently needed in our times, in his own holy handwriting: “For good tidings, both individually and collectively!” How moving and strengthening, in this fateful era in which we now stand, to hold a petka min shemaya – a sacred letter from the righteous leader of the generation – in which appear, in his very handwriting, the illuminating words: “For good tidings, both individually and collectively.” [1] Official letterhead, 21 cm. The letter is typewritten, with the addition of four words in the Rebbe’s own holy handwriting and his signature. Very fine condition: folding marks; filing holes. The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson (1902–1994), the seventh leader in the Chabad-Lubavitch dynasty, assumed the mantle of leadership in 1951 and served until his passing. A towering genius in all areas of Torah scholarship, his influence spread – and continues to spread – across the entire globe. Already during his lifetime, the Rebbe was known as a worker of salvations beyond the natural order and performed wonders like the sages of old – a phenomenon well attested among the true greats of Israel in every generation and from all communities. The novelty regarding the Lubavitcher Rebbe is that even after his passing – as Chabad Chassidim relate – his printed writings, and all the more so his holy manuscripts, continue to effect salvations, no less and even more than during his lifetime, in accordance with the teaching of our Sages (Chullin 7b): “The righteous are greater in their death than in their lifetime.”
