Item Overview

Description:

Responsa of Rabbi Joseph Karo. First Edition. Salonika, 1598. Sefer yesod
Responsa of Rabbi Joseph Karo. First Edition. Salonika, 1598. A Foundational and Rare Work

Responsa on matters of Even HaEzer by Maran Rabbi Joseph Karo, author of Beit Yosef and Shulchan Aruch.

The responsa of the Beit Yosef rank among the foundational works of rabbinic responsa literature. Leading halachic authorities of subsequent generations cite his rulings extensively, and his decisions became cornerstones of practical Jewish law.

The volume was edited and brought to press by Rabbi Yehudah Karo, the youngest son of Maran the Beit Yosef, who traveled במיוחד to Salonika for the purpose of printing the book. In his introduction, he recounts his father’s final instruction to publish these responsa and describes his own efforts in preparing them for print.

Ownership signature of Rabbi Raḥamim Hai Ḥwita HaKohen (1909–1959), one of the leading sages of Djerba, ראש ישיבה and דיין on the island. Despite suffering the loss of sons and daughters to illness during his lifetime and enduring great personal hardship, he devoted himself tirelessly to Torah study and authored numerous novellae across all areas of Torah literature. His grave became a site of prayer for many.

Among his תלמידים were Rabbi Raphael Kadir Tzaban, Rabbi Matzliach Mazuz הי״ד, Rabbi Nissim HaKohen, the righteous Rabbi Yinon Houri, and Rabbi Hanina Boughed Saadon.

A particularly rare edition.
