The letter contains halachic responses sent to the gaon Rabbi Yitzhak Isaac Herzog, upon his request. Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach (1910–1995), Rosh Yeshiva of Kol Torah and one of the foremost halachic decisors of the last generation, was widely known as the “Posek HaDor, ” as his rulings were accepted with extraordinary respect across all segments of the Jewish world. Already at the age of twenty-four, he published his groundbreaking work Meorei Esh, one of the earliest major studies addressing the laws of electricity on Shabbat, and from then onward was regarded as the foremost authority in matters of halacha and technology. His rulings on the laws of Shabbat were later published by his תלמיד Rabbi Yehoshua Neuwirth in Shemirat Shabbat Kehilchatah, which quickly became one of the most influential and widely used halachic works of modern times. Alongside his greatness in Torah, he was famed for exceptional humility, warmth, and his refusal to accept official rabbinic posts. Hundreds of thousands participated in his funeral.
