Marriage Certificate of Rabbi Avraham Yehoshua Soloveitchik, Rosh Yeshivas Brisk – Signed by Two of the Leading Halachic Authorities of the Generation: the Author of Chelkas Yaakov and the Author of Shevet HaLevi. Bnei Brak, 1973. - A rare, moving, and distinguished document: the marriage certificate of Rabbi Avraham Yehoshua Soloveitchik, later Rosh Yeshivas Brisk, bearing the signatures of two of the foremost halachic giants of the last generation — Rabbi Yaakov Mordechai Breisch, author of Responsa Chelkas Yaakov, and Rabbi Shmuel HaLevi Wosner, author of Responsa Shevet HaLevi. Before us is an impressive family and Torah document, uniting the illustrious Brisk dynasty, the great halachic authorities of post-war Europe, and the renewed Torah world of the Land of Israel. The wedding took place at the Wagshal Hall in Bnei Brak in 1973. Serving as officiating rabbi was the bride’s grandfather, Rabbi Yaakov Mordechai Breisch, rabbi of the Orthodox community of Zurich for more than forty years and one of the greatest halachic decisors of his era. His signature on the certificate grants it special importance, as the autograph of one of the surviving Torah giants of Europe and a pillar of post-Holocaust halachic leadership. Also appearing on the document is the approval and autograph signature of Rabbi Shmuel HaLevi Wosner, author of Shevet HaLevi, among the leading halachic authorities of Bnei Brak and one of the foremost rabbinic leaders of the later twentieth century. The witnesses to the marriage were Rabbi Shraga Feivel Edelman of Brisk and Rabbi Baruch Rosenberg, Rosh Yeshivas Slabodka, adding further exceptional rabbinic distinction to the document. Included is an additional document from the rabbis of the Edah HaChareidis addressed to the rabbinate of Bnei Brak, requesting authorization for the marriage ceremony to be conducted by a rabbi representing the Edah HaChareidis. This document as well bears the approval and signature of the author of Shevet HaLevi. It sheds light upon the relationship between the rabbinical institutions of the Land of Israel in those years, and upon the lofty standing of the signatories. Rabbi Yaakov Mordechai Breisch (1896–1976), rabbi of Zurich, was renowned as one of the leading halachic authorities of his generation. He corresponded in Torah matters with the greatest sages of his time, and left behind the celebrated series Responsa Chelkas Yaakov, among the foundational halachic works of the modern era. Before us is a highly desirable and scarce item, combining the joy of a נאמן בית בישראל with the signatures of the leading sages of the generation, and illuminating an important chapter in the Brisk dynasty in the Land of Israel.
