Manuscript. Collection of Expositions on Ethics and Aggadah, written entirely by the Maggid of Vilkomir, one of the noted sages of Vilna. Vilna, circa 1835. Unpublished. - A fascinating and highly diverse Torah manuscript, written entirely by the Maggid of Vilkomir, among the well-known scholars of Vilna. The manuscript includes: • A broad and profound commentary on Book of Lamentations. • A rare compilation of nearly one hundred different interpretations on the verse: “Fear the Lord, my son, and the king; with those given to change do not associate” (Book of Proverbs). • A treatise entitled Megillat Setarim on accepting suffering with love, arranged in two sections comprising six chapters. • Dozens of expositions in Aggadah and ethics on varied subjects. Interspersed among the leaves are novellae on Pesachim and on the Torah. • Sixteen different interpretations of the Talmudic statement in Megillah: “A person is obligated to become intoxicated on Purim.” • A unique literary account of the story of “Count Potocki” — the righteous convert of Vilna — recorded by the Maggid, who was present within the Vilna community. A rare item combining Lithuanian scholarship, ethical thought, and first-hand historical testimony. This work was previously unknown, and its existence has only recently come to light. On one of the leaves the author signed his name: “Signed, Yitzchak Aharon.” [106] pages. Overall condition: Good. Ten leaves have marginal damage with loss of text; these leaves have undergone professional restoration with paper infill. The original binding has likewise been restored.
