Printed in Frankfurt am Main in 1711, this is the first edition published during the author’s lifetime. The Maharshashach – Great Sage of Ashkenaz and Grandfather of the Chatam Sofer Rabbi Shmuel ben Rabbi Yosef Yuzpa HaKohen Schotten (1644–1719), among the leading rabbis of Ashkenaz in his generation, served as head of the great Klaus in Frankfurt am Main and as rabbi of the County of Hesse-Darmstadt. He was renowned as a towering scholar of penetrating analysis and intellectual rigor. He was the great-grandfather of Maran the Chatam Sofer, and Rabbi Shmuel Sofer—the Chatam Sofer’s father—was named in his honor. His glosses to the tractates Nedarim, Nazir, and Bava Batra were printed in the Frankfurt Talmud edition (1720–1722), while his novellae on additional tractates remained in manuscript.
