Leaf from the Chiddushim Notebook of Rabban Shel Kol Bnei Ha-Golah – Rabbi Akiva Eiger - An original and significant leaf from the notebook of novellae (chiddushim) of Rabban Shel Kol Bnei Ha-Golah, Rabbi Akiva Eiger — one of the most influential and authoritative Torah scholars of the modern era. Rabbi Akiva Eiger’s writings were copied from his responsa and letters by scribes, primarily his sons — the distinguished scholars Rabbi Avraham Eiger and Rabbi Shlomo Eiger — and prepared for print in strict accordance with his instructions. As his son records in the introduction to Responsa Rabbi Akiva Eiger (Warsaw, 1835), his father carefully directed him how to transcribe the responsa with exact precision. Moreover, Rabbi Akiva Eiger himself reviewed the manuscript pages, correcting, adding, and refining them in his own handwriting. On the present leaf, the Gaon made more than twenty autograph corrections and emendations: opening and closing parentheses, stylistic refinements, deletions and insertions of words, and textual clarifications. We thus have before us a vivid working document from the editorial process of one of the greatest halachic authorities of all generations. The novellae appearing on this leaf were later printed — with numerous variations — in Derush Ve-Chiddush Tinyana (Derush I for Shabbat HaGadol), and from there disseminated into additional works. A comparison between the manuscript and the printed text reveals the stages of refinement the material underwent prior to publication. It is well known that every word uttered by Rabbi Akiva Eiger was weighed and measured with utmost precision. Rabbi Chaim HaLevi Soloveitchik of Brisk regarded a statement of Rabbi Akiva Eiger as equivalent to that of one of the Rishonim. The Gaon of Tchebin reportedly said that if Rabbi Akiva Eiger brought proof from the Talmud, one might analyze his reasoning — but if he wrote from pure logical deduction, there was no room to dispute him. It was also known that he distinguished between works published directly from his own manuscripts (as here) and those recorded from students’ notes. The Chazon Ish famously remarked: “Rabbi Akiva Eiger could have lived in the generation of the Rashba; rather, the Holy One had mercy upon us and gave us Rabbi Akiva Eiger in our generation.” [1] Large paper leaf, 31 × 23 cm.
