“And He Studied Here with Diligence” – Early and Rare Letter of Recommendation in the Handwriting and with the Signature of Rabbeinu Chaim HaLevi Soloveitchik. Brisk, 1895 - A rare, moving, and highly important letter of recommendation, entirely in the handwriting and bearing the signature of the mighty gaon Rabbi Chaim HaLevi Soloveitchik, rabbi of Brisk, one of the principal architects of the Lithuanian yeshiva world and among the greatest Torah geniuses of all generations. Before us is an early letter from the first years of Rabbi Chaim’s tenure as rabbi of Brisk, after he ascended to the seat of his illustrious father, Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, author of Beit HaLevi. Documents from this early period are exceedingly rare, especially personal letters in his own hand concerning students and young scholars. The letter was written as a recommendation for a yeshiva student named Yisrael Dov of Volozhin, concerning whom Rabbi Chaim testifies in brief but weighty words: “I know him… he is a precious and worthy young man, and he studied here with diligence.” Such an expression, issuing from Rabbi Chaim HaLevi—renowned for his precision, reserve, and sparing praise—carries extraordinary significance. A single word of approbation from Rabbi Chaim was considered equal to the testimony of many, all the more so when he praises a young student as a “precious and worthy young man.” At the close of the letter one senses both his humility and the burdens of communal leadership, as he writes: “Since it is difficult for me to arrange matters in writing, therefore I shall be brief.” These lines open a rare window into the personality of Rabbi Chaim—a towering genius upon whose shoulders rested the weight of communal leadership, yet who still found time to write a personal recommendation for a young scholar. The recipient of the letter was the gaon and saintly Rabbi Yosef David Shachor, rabbi of Antopol, later rabbi of Sumilovitch. Rabbi Yosef David, who occupied the seat once held by the righteous Rabbi Pinchas Michael of Antopol, was himself regarded as a holy man and wonder-worker, and many turned to him for blessing and prayer. In another letter Rabbi Chaim even requested that he pray on his behalf. Rabbi Yosef David was related to Rabbi Chaim’s wife, and therefore Rabbi Chaim addresses him at the opening of the letter with the familial title ShB”Z (kinsman of my wife), and concludes with Sh”B (kinsman). These details lend an intimate and warm tone to this rare document. Before us is a highly desirable and precious item, uniting within it the exalted personality of Rabbeinu Chaim HaLevi, the yeshiva world of Volozhin and Brisk, and his personal, fatherly concern for students of Torah at the beginning of their path.
