Long Letter by Rabbi Yitzchak Zev Soloveitchik to Rabbi Jung of London - Yeshivat Torat Chesed of Brisk – Appeal Letter for Support Signed by Our Master the Rabbi Yitzchak Zev Soloveitchik. Together with Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Yisrael Chaim Kaplan. Brisk, 1930. Important and moving letter concerning the support of one of the renowned yeshivot of Brisk, Yeshivat Torat Chesed, addressed to Rabbi Jung of London with a request to come to the aid of the yeshiva in its time of distress. The letter was written in Yiddish in the hand of the gaon Rabbi Yisrael Chaim Kaplan, head of the yeshiva, and concludes with the autograph signature of our master Rabbi Yitzchak Zev Soloveitchik, rabbi of Brisk. Text of his signature: ”Your admirer, Yitzchak Zev, son of my father the gaon, the pious one, leader of all Israel, our master Chaim HaLevi Soloveitchik of blessed saintly memory.” Yeshivat Torat Chesed was founded in the days of Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, author of Beit HaLevi, and was later taken under the protection of his illustrious son Rabbi Chaim Soloveitchik, who provided for its every need and from time to time delivered shiurim there. After Rabbi Chaim’s passing, his son, the Brisker Rav, assumed responsibility for the institution and continued to sustain it. Among the distinguished heads of the yeshiva in earlier years was the gaon Rabbi Moshe Mordechai Epstein, author of Amrei Moshe. After his passing, the Brisker Rav appointed Rabbi Yisrael Chaim Kaplan to stand at its head, one of the notable figures in the Lithuanian yeshiva world. Rabbi Yisrael Chaim Kaplan was renowned as an outstanding Torah scholar and belonged to the foremost yeshiva family circles of his generation. He was the son-in-law of Rabbi Yerucham Levovitz, the famed spiritual mentor of Mir Yeshiva. During the years of destruction he escaped with the Mir Yeshiva from Vilna to Shanghai, and after the war emigrated to the United States, where he served as Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Torah Vodaath. Before us is a rare and significant document reflecting the self-sacrifice of the Brisker Rav for the maintenance of Torah life in Brisk, and the continual struggle of this illustrious yeshiva during the interwar years. Letters signed by the Brisker Rav on communal matters are exceedingly rare, especially those directly concerning the support of a Torah institution in Brisk.
