Dozens of scholarly marginal annotations by an unidentified gaon. - Korban Netanel – an important and foundational commentary on the rulings of the Asher ben Jehiel on Seder Moed and Seder Nashim, authored by the eminent Rabbi Yaakov Weil. Printed in Karlsruhe in 1755, this is the first edition, issued during the author’s lifetime. It became one of the central works of the beit midrash and was studied with great depth by leading Torah scholars for generations. Throughout the margins of the present copy appear approximately thirty lengthy, learned, and incisive annotations, penned by a great scholar whose identity remains unknown. The annotator studies the author’s words in depth, raises objections, resolves difficulties, and at times disputes him with sharp Talmudic rigor. Among his expressions are: “The words of the author, of blessed memory, are astonishing… and he overlooked the words of Tosafot in their place, ” “According to the reading of our editions, in my humble opinion, ” as well as: “This is difficult for me, ” “It seems to me, ” “Requires further analysis, ” “The discerning will understand, ” and more. These annotations reveal before us the figure of a true gaon, who sat immersed in study with one of the major halachic works of his era, sharpening his pen in the battle of Torah scholarship.
