An important early edition of the Rif with classic commentaries, including the first edition of the foundational work HaMaor HaGadol by Rabbi Zerachiah ha-Levi. One of the significant sixteenth-century printings of halachic Talmudic literature. Presented here is part of the second volume, containing Tractates Kiddushin and Chullin, as well as the Tosefta, together with the commentaries of Rabbeinu Nissim and the Mordechai. Printed in Venice, 1552. Throughout the leaves of the volume appear more than twenty lengthy early handwritten annotations. Though not yet studied, they display broad knowledge and sharp analytical insight, and were evidently penned by an accomplished Torah scholar commenting upon the words of the Ran and related commentaries. Scholarly annotations of this extent in an early printed book greatly enhance the individuality and importance of the present copy. Stefansky, Sifrei Yesod 140.
