”To Send Immediately Whatever Is Possible” – Rare Autograph Document by the Steipler Gaon at Age Twenty-Nine. Pinsk, 1929 - Early and Rare Autograph Letter by the Steipler Gaon at Age Twenty-Nine – Requesting Urgent Financial Assistance An early and rare letter, entirely in the holy handwriting and bearing the signature of Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky—the renowned Steipler Gaon—written when he was a young scholar of only twenty-nine years of age. Sent from Pinsk on the 41st day of the Omer (26 Iyar), 1929. Addressed to the administration of the Vaad HaYeshivot in Vilna, the Steipler urgently requests that the stipend due to him for the month of Nisan be sent without delay, and, if possible, that an advance payment for the month of Iyar also be provided. The letter vividly reflects the severe financial hardship under which he was living at the time. In his own words: “I trust that they will sympathize with my situation and see to it that everything possible be sent immediately.” The letter was written only about a year and a half after his marriage to Pesha Miriam Karelitz, daughter of Rabbi Shemaryahu Yosef Karelitz and sister of the illustrious Chazon Ish, who had personally arranged the match between the couple. At the time, the Steipler was serving as a lecturer (Rosh Mesivta) at the Novardok Yeshivah in Pinsk. The letter also mentions Rabbi Aharon Dov Alter Voranovsky, the trusted aide and secretary of the eminent Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzenski. Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky (1899–1985), universally known as the Steipler, was named after his birthplace, Hornostaypil. Revered as one of the greatest Torah scholars and saintly figures of the twentieth century, he became a leading authority within the Orthodox Jewish world and authored the celebrated series Kehillot Yaakov. The Steipler was the brother-in-law of the Chazon Ish and father of Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky. Renowned for his humility and lifelong avoidance of honor and public office, he nevertheless spoke with unquestioned authority whenever communal matters required it.
