A Rare Fully Autograph Letter by Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski — Addressed to Rabbi Yechiel Michel (Yirmiyahu Eliyahu) Botchko and His Wife | Vilna, 5690 [1930] - An important and fascinating letter, written entirely—most unusually—in the autograph hand and signature of Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski, universally recognized as the foremost rabbinic leader of his generation. The letter is addressed to Rabbi Yirmiyahu Eliyahu Botchko, one of the outstanding disciples of the Novardok yeshivah movement and founder of the renowned Etz Chaim Yeshivah in Montreux, Switzerland. In a striking departure from the norm in rabbinic correspondence, Rabbi Chaim Ozer directs his greetings not only to Rabbi Botchko himself but also to his “modest wife, distinguished by her good deeds, ” despite the well-known halachic dictum discouraging inquiries after a woman’s welfare, even through her husband (Shulchan Aruch, Even HaEzer 21). This unusual detail becomes even more remarkable when viewed in light of Rabbi Chaim Ozer’s position as the acknowledged leader of world Jewry. Every day, countless letters were dispatched from his office in Vilna to communities and rabbinic leaders throughout the Jewish world. The overwhelming majority were drafted by his distinguished secretaries and aides, while he generally added only his signature. The present letter, however, was penned entirely in his own hand. The reason becomes clear from the contents. Rabbi Chaim Ozer is writing on behalf of a close relative—described as “my blood relative”—a physician by profession who was traveling to Switzerland and required assistance as he began a new chapter in his life. Motivated by his profound sense of responsibility for others and his exceptional commitment to acts of kindness, Rabbi Chaim Ozer personally appeals to Rabbi Botchko and his wife to extend assistance and hospitality to the newcomer. What might superficially be viewed as favoritism emerges here as a noble expression of chesed and a fulfillment of the rabbinic ideal of supporting and drawing close one’s relatives. Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski (1863–1940), Rabbi of Vilna, President of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah, and author of the celebrated responsa work Achiezer, was the preeminent spiritual leader of Lithuanian and Orthodox Jewry during the era of the Chafetz Chaim and Rabbi Chaim Soloveitchik of Brisk. The Chafetz Chaim himself famously referred to him as “the President of Klal Yisrael.” The recipient, Rabbi Yirmiyahu Eliyahu Botchko (1888–1956), was among the foremost disciples of the Alter of Novardok and later served on the faculty of Yeshiva Torah Vodaath in New York. In 1927 he founded the Etz Chaim Yeshivah in Montreux, Switzerland, which became one of the most important centers of Torah learning in Western Europe. [1] leaf, approximately 21 × 26 cm.
