Embroidered Wall Hanging Depicting the Binding of Isaac. Jerusalem, 19th Century - An attractive and impressive wall hanging, embroidered in blue thread on linen cloth and surrounded by a blue fabric border. The center of the embroidery depicts the scene of the Binding of Isaac: Abraham stands beside the altar, binding his son, while the Angel of the Lord extends his hand from Heaven to halt the sacrifice. In the lower section, Abraham and Isaac are shown on their journey to the site of the Binding, accompanied by Ishmael and Eliezer walking behind them. At the top appears the inscription: ”May You remember the descendants of Isaac with mercy this day; Jerusalem, the Holy City.” A characteristic example of Jerusalem folk art, produced for homes and institutions, combining a central biblical motif with a strong connection to the Land of Israel and Jerusalem.
