Autograph Certification Signed by Rabbi Raphael Shapiro, Rosh Yeshivah of Volozhin - “And with Hashem’s Help, Nothing Improper Shall Emerge from Under His Hand” Autograph certification for a ritual slaughterer and examiner (shochet u-vodek), entirely in the handwriting and signature of the gaon Rabbi Raphael Shapiro, author of Torat Raphael, Rosh Yeshivah of Volozhin, son-in-law of Maran the Netziv of Volozhin, and father-in-law of Rabbeinu Rabbi Chaim HaLevi Soloveitchik of Brisk. Bobruisk, 1886. In his letter, Rabbi Raphael attests to the recipient’s scholarship, piety, and qualifications, granting him an enthusiastic and unequivocal endorsement: “Although he is still young in years, nevertheless one may rely upon his slaughtering and inspection just as upon one of the expert ritual slaughterers.” The certification was written in Bobruisk, White Russia (present-day Belarus), during a significant period in Rabbi Raphael’s life. It was during these years that, in an act of remarkable selflessness, he relinquished his position at the Volozhin Yeshivah in favor of his son-in-law, Rabbi Chaim HaLevi Soloveitchik of Brisk, who would later revolutionize the world of Torah scholarship. Rabbi Raphael was then serving as Rabbi of Bobruisk, until he was called back to Volozhin to head the yeshivah upon its reopening. A particularly noteworthy feature of the present document is its distinctive script. It was written in bold, prominent ink, reflecting Rabbi Raphael’s well-known practice of avoiding metal pens and writing exclusively with a bird’s quill, out of reverence for the rabbinic injunction: “You shall not raise iron upon them” (see Sefer Volozhin, 1970, p. 192). Rabbi Raphael Shapiro (1837–1921), Rabbi of Volozhin and Rosh Yeshivah of the famed Volozhin Yeshivah, was among the leading roshei yeshivah of Lithuania in the generation following the Netziv. He was the son of Rabbi Aryeh Leib Shapiro of Kovno (“R. Leibele Kovner”), son-in-law of the Netziv, and father-in-law of Rabbi Chaim HaLevi Soloveitchik of Brisk. In 1870 he was appointed assistant Rosh Yeshivah alongside the Netziv. He later served as Rabbi of Bobruisk, and when the Volozhin Yeshivah was reestablished in 1899, he was invited to return and lead it. In this role, he became the final Rosh Yeshivah of the historic “Mother of Yeshivos” during its last years before its ultimate closure in the era of the First World War. Renowned as one of the foremost Talmudic scholars of his generation, Rabbi Raphael developed an original analytical method known as “Leshitasei, ” which sought to uncover the unifying principles underlying the teachings of Chazal, the Rishonim, and the halachic authorities. His major work, Torat Raphael, was published during his lifetime, while many of his manuscripts were tragically lost during the Holocaust.
