Sefer HaMitzvot by Maimonides, together with the critiques of Nachmanides on Maimonides’ enumeration of the commandments, and the celebrated work Megillat Esther by Rabbi Yitzchak de Leon, written in defense of Maimonides’ methodology and in response to the objections of Nachmanides. Amsterdam, 1660. An important early edition of one of the foundational works of Jewish law and thought. Sefer HaMitzvot serves as the basis for Maimonides’ enumeration of the 613 commandments and exerted a profound influence upon the development of halachic literature and Jewish scholarship throughout the generations. Alongside the critiques of Nachmanides appears Megillat Esther, one of the principal works composed in the great debate surrounding the enumeration of the commandments. The author's name is explicitly mentioned on the title page: “And thereafter shines the path of the Rabbi, the esteemed Rabbi Yitzchak de Leon, of blessed memory.” This edition also includes two of Maimonides’ most important and influential writings: Iggeret Teiman (The Epistle to Yemen) and Ma’amar Techiyat HaMetim (Treatise on the Resurrection of the Dead). These works were composed in response to the theological and spiritual challenges confronting Jewish communities in Maimonides’ lifetime and remain cornerstones of Jewish philosophy and Maimonidean thought.
