Cheshvan 5735 / 1974) was renowned as one of the most mysterious and revered kabbalists of his generation—a wonder-worker, spiritual master, and expert in matters of souls and reincarnation. His name became associated with numerous accounts of mystical insight and hidden knowledge, and he was regarded as an exceptional figure in the world of twentieth-century Kabbalah. Alongside his involvement in esoteric pursuits, Rabbi Patillon earned his livelihood through painting. His artworks, characterized by human sensitivity and depictions of ordinary folk, earned him the public epithet by which he became known: “The Holy Painter.” Rabbi Patillon belonged to a small and secretive circle of hidden kabbalists. Members of the group referred to one another by nicknames derived from their worldly occupations, including: “The Shoemaker” — Rabbi Moshe Yaakov Rabikov “The Milkman” — Rabbi Chaim Ezra Cohen “The Tiler” — Rabbi Avraham Fish “The Street Sweeper” — Rabbi Yosef Voltuch.
