Magnificent Hand-Illustrated Mizrach Plaque – A Combination of Biblical Motifs and Royal Heraldry. France, 19th Century - A unique, rare, and exceptionally beautiful Mizrach plaque, entirely drawn and illustrated by hand in watercolor and ink on paper. The plaque displays rich artistic craftsmanship combining biblical figures, traditional Jewish symbols, and European royal heraldry. At the center appears the word “Mizrach” in large, ornamented square letters, alongside the inscription: “From this side comes the spirit of life, ” an acronym formed by the letters of the word Mizrach. On either side stand full-length figures of the leaders of the Jewish nation upon decorated pedestals. On the left is Aharon HaKohen, the High Priest, in full regal attire, wearing the Choshen upon his chest, clothed in the Ephod and Me’il, with the biblical turban upon his head and holding the golden incense shovel in his hand. On the right is Moshe Rabbeinu in traditional dress, rays of light emanating from his head, holding the Tablets of the Covenant engraved with the Ten Commandments. Coat of Arms of the Kingdom of France (House of Bourbon): In the upper section of the plaque appears an extraordinary heraldic motif—the blue shield of the French monarchy bearing three golden fleur-de-lis. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown, draped with an ermine-lined royal mantle, and backed by four crossed crimson flags and spears. This combination reflects the influence of European artistic traditions and the admiration of royalty among Jewish communities of the period. In the lower section, beneath the word “Mizrach, ” appears a golden seven-branched Menorah. Flanking it on either side are two roaring lions (Lions of Judah), guarding it and symbolizing strength and courage. [1] paper leaf. 27 × 21 cm. Ink and watercolor.
