The composition opens with two fascinating chapters devoted to the life of the Tanna Rabbi Eliezer ben Hyrcanus, and continues with homiletical teachings and expansions spanning from the Creation of the World through the Exodus from Egypt. A foundational work of immense influence on Jewish custom, liturgy, and Kabbalah. It serves as the primary source for many widespread Jewish practices, including the Chair of Elijah at a circumcision ceremony, the role and standing position of the sandek, the custom of shofar blowing during the month of Elul, as well as various Havdalah and funeral traditions. The work is also notable as the earliest Midrash to present a developed angelological system—featuring figures such as Metatron and Samael—alongside complex cosmological concepts that later served as an important source of inspiration for the Zohar.
