Spice Tower – Bezalel Jerusalem, Early 20th Century - An impressive spice tower crafted from carved white organic material, handmade by the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts in Jerusalem. The tower stands on a stepped base and features a spherical spice compartment that opens by removal. The body is decorated with carved geometric and floral motifs characteristic of early Bezalel craftsmanship. Surmounting the tower is a carved Star of David bearing the inscription “Zion” at its center, one of the motifs most closely associated with Bezalel works of the early twentieth century and with the spirit of the Jewish national revival in the Land of Israel. Bezalel’s carved-bone and organic-material works are among the most distinctive and sought-after objects produced by the Jerusalem workshop, which combined local craftsmanship with Jewish and Zionist motifs to create a unique artistic language identified with the emerging Jewish settlement in Palestine.
